Lawsuit alleges racial discrimination at Cypress Inn

An alumni group of a predominantly black fraternity has filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against Cypress Inn, claiming the restaurant canceled a private party after learning the members are black. Restaurant owner Renea Henson said Tuesday that the allegations are “completely untrue.” The suit filed in U.S. District Court last month claims alumni group had planned a Feb. 23 social event and fundraiser. The group made the initial plans on Dec. 15 and paid a $1,500 reservation fee before meeting with a Cypress Inn representative in early February.

HP Spinoffs Accused of Race Discrimination in Hiring, Promotions

HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. were hit with an age and race discrimination lawsuit Monday claiming job cuts at the two Hewlett-Packard spinoffs since 2012 disproportionately affected older, black workers. Lawyers at Winston Cooks in Birmingham, Alabama, and The Greene Law Firm in San Francisco filed suit on behalf of two former and one current black HP employee claiming they were repeatedly passed over for promotions.

A chicken processing plant must face allegations that it discriminated against an employee of African descent, an Alabama federal judge ruled Monday, saying negative stereotypes about voodoo practitioners are enough to demonstrate potential racial bias. Koch Foods of Alabama LLC had argued that supervisors’ alleged remarks about Monolesa Fitzpatrick’s practice of voodoo did not fit a federal law banning discrimination based on race, saying complaints made to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission only
noted discrimination based on national origin.
